Versailles is visually stunning, clean, and beautiful. Every surface is decorated, and the gardens are sculpted impeccably. Twain goes so far as to compare it to the Garden of Eden. In comparison, Faubourg St. Antoine is filthy, poor, and crime ridden. Its inhabitants live hand-to-mouth and are desperate and miserable.
