The Innocent Man
Who is Denice Haraway from the nonfiction book, The Innocent Man?
.
.
Denice Haraway was a college student who lived and worked in Ada, Oklahoma. In 1984, she was working a night shift at a convenience store in Ada. She suddenly disappeared during her shift, likely kidnapped. She was presumed murdered. The Ada police arrested two local men—Tommy Ward and Karl Fontenot—and charged them with the murder after coercing false confessions from them. They were convicted of the crime despite a complete lack of evidence. After their convictions, Denice body was found 27 miles from Ada. The cause of death was a gunshot wound. These details were entirely inconsistent with Ward and Fontenot’s confessions, but the court system refused to overturn the convictions.
