The Russians and Germans were the Eastern Bloc, and for several decades after the conclusion of World War II, Europe was essentially divided into two separate socioeconomic and political regions. The West region was democratic and capitalist, the East was autocratic and communist. The Soviet Union and East Germany were the primary countries in the so-called Eastern Bloc, and the presence of military, political, and espionage-oriented personnel in the area around the tunnel facility is the defining element in the circumstances the allied agents find themselves in.
