Joseph McCarthy was a United States Senator during the 1940s and 1950s. Boorstin describes McCarthy as skilled in creating pseudo-events that shared little with the "reality" they were supposed to have been based on. He perfected a technique of giving press conferences during the morning hours, so that he could announce afternoon press conferences. He also talented in giving press conferences, during which no information was transmitted to the public. Boorstin states, "Newspapermen were his most potent allies for they were his co-manufacturers of pseudo-events."
