Poetry is a recurring idea. Like most of Stevens' poems,"Key West" may be about any number of other things, but it is also about poetry. Most of Stevens' poems have to do with poetry, and, in fact, almost all of them explore the writing experience or the experience of reading and perceiving poetry. Without question, "The Idea of Order atKey West" is a sort of allegory, that is, it functions as a microcosm of a larger situation. In this case, the situation, or macrocosm, is Stevens and his work. Imagine Stevens as the female singer, her song as one of his poems, and the speaker of the poem (the listener) as the readers.
