How is Eddie his own worst enemy in the film, The Hustler?

Eddie cannot seem to get past himself. He is selfish and believes that he is the most important person in the world. Through his relationship with Sarah, he finally begins to realize that there are other people out there. In the end, he is a changed man, but he has to lose something he loves first.
