How does the author illustrate the illusion of perfection in the book, The Husbands: A Novel?

Carter's character is symbolic of perfection. Lauren regards him as the ideal match after their brief time together, and goes on to compare him to all her successive husbands. However, Carter ultimately proves unattainable and thus reveals the illusive nature of perfection itself.
