Katniss attacks Heymitch early on in the book because she believes that his laziness and careless attitude are going to get she and Peeta killed. She actually attacks him on several occasions, but usually relents as she learns of his plans. He also plants the seed that Kat and Peeta are lovers...which also ticks her off.
