What is the beginning of the book about?

In the beginning of the novel, Percy and Annabeth are separated from their friends and sent into the abyss. Tartarus, located beneath Hades, marks the beginning of the two protagonists journey to the Doors of Death, where they hope to close the portals and keep the monsters from invading the mortal world.
