What is the symbolism of the "lamp" in the novel, The Horse Whisperer?

The lamp is a symbol of a broken relationship. When Annie tries to talk to Grace after she learns Grace rode Joe’s horse, Grace pushes her mother away, breaking a lamp. The lamp breaks into three pieces representing Grace, Pilgrim, and Annie.
