It was declared that the Templars were to answer to only the Pope. The number of members in the Knights Templar grew rapidly and the order became very rich in land and possessions because potential recruits were required to give up all their material possessions to the order when they joined. Since the order was not allowed to dispose of any possessions, the Templars soon became extremely wealthy. The Templars also became mediators in political affairs.
