Why did Gregory of Tours write The History of the Franks?

Gregory of Tours wrote The History of the Franks because he knew how to read and write. Many other bishops were not literate. Although Gregory of Tours admitted that he was not the greatest writer, he felt it was his obligation since he was a literate man in an illiterate world.
