Suicide notes are a symbol of the pain a person feels as they struggle with mental illness. In this novel, Frank's suicide note is also a symbol of the weight of the guilt he is carrying and his inability to cope. Alexander wrote several suicide notes, all symbols of his pain, but he did not actually follow through with killing himself. The suicide note that was found on the cliff is a symbol of Janey's effort to cover up her role in Alexander's death.
