Indira’s bird, Madho Singh, represents her unlikely friendship with Lakshmi. As Queen, it is highly unlikely that she ever would have formed a relationship with a low-class woman such as Lakshmi. However, the two of them are brought together and develop the closet thing to a friendship that they can. This is why she gives Malik Madho Singh at the end of the novel. Indira wants Lakshmi to know that she is thinking of her and that their friendship during Latika’s recovery will never be forgotten.
