The novel is separated into four parts, and these parts contain a prologue, epilogue, and 22 chapters. Each chapter starts with the date that the chapter starts. A few of these chapters also include the location, especially when Lakshmi moves from one city, such as Jaipur, to another, such as Shimla. Each chapter is placed in chronological order, starting in September 1955 (15) and ending on “November 5, 1956” (338). Many chapters cover multiple days, especially as the story progresses. The end of Part Three and a vast majority of Part Four include letters to Lakshmi from characters like Kumar and Kanta.
