.
.
Amina is one of the primary characters of the story "Return to Sender." She is Yusuf's wife and Ismael's mother. Although Amina and her family have a stable life in the States, Amina cannot quell her guilt over fleeing Afghanistan. Despite Yusuf's reluctance to return to Kabul, Amina eventually convinces him to do so for one year.
In Kabul, Amina works at the local hospital. She sees innumerable horrors. Witnessing the brutalization of children's bodies particularly disturbs her. One day, after waking from a nightmare of such horrors, Amina discovers one of her son's dismembered fingers in a box outside her door. Over the course of the following hours, the rest of her son's body appears piece by piece in box after box. Amina stitches the body back together, realizing that she and Yusuf will be stuck in Kabul forever.
