Who is Uncle Carlos from The Hate You Give?

Uncle Carlos is Lisa's older brother. While Maverick was in prison, he took on the role of a father figure to Starr, as he helped look after her while Maverick was in prison. Carlos is a police officer, and he lives in Riverton Hills, the upscale neighborhood where Starr attends a private school.

At the beginning of the novel, Carlos defends Officer Cruise, but when he learns that Cruise pointed his weapon at Starr, he punches him and gets put on leave. Carlos also takes in DeVante when he no longer safe in Garden Heights. Uncle carlos tells Starr that regardless of Khalil's criminal activity, he did not deserve to die.
