Who is Brooks?

Brooks is the son of Leslie and Jules. Whereas he and his mother have a relationship that is more like friendship rather than that of a mother and son, his relationship with Jules becomes more strained. Brooks does not want to listen to Jules’ “plant talk” and often talks back to his father. An elusive character whose perspective is never shared with the reader except through the eyes of Maddie, little is known about Brooks. He and Maddie fall for one another, and it is clear that although their difference in race is a problem for many islanders, they share many personality traits. They are both deep thinkers who care about the people around them.
