The graffiti present on the island's monuments represent rebellion and desired social change. The slurs attack the poisonous Grudder war plane factory. The vandal is not revealed until the end of the novel, but the motive for the graffiti is a personal one. The graffiti elicits one of two reactions from the residents, either support for the rebellious intent or disgust that someone would say something so brash in such an ugly way, although the claims against Grudder are true.
