Once a higher-up in the Grudder factory and entwined in the conservative political circle, the Colonel is losing his memory. He is often caught up in his war-filled past. Now that he is no longer able to abuse and manipulate Veronica, Veronica watches over him and makes sure that he does not cause too much trouble. The only episode in the novel in which the reader experiences the Colonel’s point of view is when he has a wartime flashback and breaks into the Castle, sending Veronica searching for him in the woods.
