After the increase of caterpillars becomes overbearing and the novel is on its way to its climax, the newly hatched moths riddle Avalon Island. The moths continue the metaphor that the caterpillars set up - change is inevitable and something nefarious is on the horizon. The male moths fly around erratically looking for females to mate with while the females act as a parallel to the women on the island. As the female moths have large wings yet cannot fly, they are similar to the women of Avalon Island who are infertile due to the pollution that the Grudder factory has inflicted upon the island's residents.
