The Island is a symbol of elitist snobbery. Ogden and Kitty feel as though they are set apart from others; their superiority is a birthright. Not only does the Island physically set them apart from others, but it metaphorically does as well. When Kitty expresses concerns about the Island's distance from civilization, Ogden replies that people will come to them. Again this is indicative of Ogden's attitude that others will bend to his will as he is always at the helm. No one can access the Island without an invitation and water transportation.
