Evie is a medievalist who has concentrated on the history of women's lives. Twenty-five years ago she had written a book about anchoresses, nuns who walled into the cell of an abbey to spend their days praying. The book had won Evie prizes, a job, and eventually tenure at NYU in the Department of History.
