Sailing is symbolic for white privilege and elitism. It is a rich man's sport, and bespeaks status and success. Literally, sailing represents the exclusivity that comes with the trappings of yacht clubs and restricted membership. Figuratively sailing can symbolize the idea that when one is born into wealth it becomes easier to sail through life, and weather the winds of change when one lives a life blessed with advantages. Ogden judges those around him by their ability to sail and is quicker to accept Len Levy given his penchant and ability to sail. Access to the island is restricted, in a sense, to those who know how to sail.
