The spoon symbolizes personal connection and its depth. Despite the obstacles that kept Len and Joan apart, they still remained tethered to one another, not only in their daughter Evie, but also in their abiding love for one another. Joan chose to memorialize their relationship in stone that held a key word from Len's statement that they began on the beach. Len carried with him a spoon that would keep Joan safe in the event she was to have a seizure. The spoon is indicative of the fact that even when life dictates a different direction, deep connections remain intact.
