what is the central conflict of the story ?

Although there are many external conflicts, the central conflict to the story remains man vs himself. Daru faces the internal conflict of how to treat the Arab prisoner in an environment that his hostile to both French and Arab. Daru faces an existential threat that cannot be solved no matter how he treats his Arab guest.
