Almost all of the characters in The Green Pastures are drawn directly from or symbolic of the Old Testament: God, Gabriel, Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah, Moses, etc. Connelly, however, took "artistic license" in creating several supplemental fictional characters to tell his version of these traditional biblical stories.
