In Act I, Scene I, the action is driven by several tensions in American culture and society. The most apparent of these tensions is racial, with the deep-seated suspicion and conflict between the races dramatized through the central, extended metaphor of boxing. In other words, the physical match between black and white boxers is representative of the cultural fight between the black and white races. Brady is the "White Hope", a character who embodies the hope of a significant number of whites that black people would remain subservient.
