Although the mountain had plenty of snow to allow skiing, the official skiing season had not yet begun. Theroux pointed out that the Japanese "behave in concert" and would not ski outside of the "season." In fact, he said every activity from skiing to kite-flying to walking in the park had a specific season and Japanese were unwilling to buck the system.
