Why had Sadik still not taken a pilgrimage to Mecca when he met Theroux in Chapter 4?

Although a Muslim and although his travels took him close to Mecca, Sadik had not gone on pilgrimage because he knew it would mark the end of his way of life. He told Theroux that after pilgrimage, he would need to stop drinking and flirting with women and would need to give alms to the poor. Accustomed to a bachelor's life of wine, women, and song, he was not yet willing to give those up.
