Why did Theroux leave behind his passport and camera while trying to go to the Goktiek Viaduct?

Theroux had been told repeatedly that the Goktiek Viaduct was off-limits to foreigners. He was afraid the passport and camera would make him too conspicuous and authorities would immediately realize he was a tourist. By leaving behind these items, he hoped to blend in more with the locals.
