Why did Paramahansa Yogananda, the guru followed by Mr. Gupta in Chapter 9, go to America?

The guru claimed he had a vision of millions of Americans desperately seeking his guidance and believed the Lord was calling him to service in America. In addition, the guru was convinced there was a karmic link between the two countries since Christopher Columbus had mistakenly thought he had landed in India.
