Although Mr. Lau was running a successful business in Malaysia, he nevertheless felt that as a Chinese, he was not valued by the Malaysian government. He claimed he had been passed over for promotions and pay increases because the government wanted to improve the economic situation of Malays. However, he also admitted to hiring Malays himself, rather than fellow Chinese or Indians, because he did not want hard workers who would compete with him.
