Theroux saw many half-American children while traveling in Vietnam. These children were a legacy of the war--the offspring of American soldiers and Vietnamese women. Because of the war situation, many Vietnamese viewed these children as an unwelcome reminder of America's involvement in their country, and Theroux, therefore, was offered several of these children by Vietnamese civilians.
