After describing the German drug addict's desperate attempts to maintain his habit, Theroux compared the addict to the desperate souls who flood India to suffer in anonymity among other desperate souls. Theroux saw the German as Indian author V.S. Naipaul did, as a Westerner forcing himself on fragile societies with little concern for the people living there.
