Prior to the coup, Afghanistan was "cheap and barbarous," according to Theroux. People traveled there to buy hashish. After the coup, the prices went up, but the country remained barbarous. Travel was uncomfortable and dangerous, and Theroux found the Afghans lazy and violent. He pointed out that even the hippies were beginning to find it intolerable.
