Although the methods of washing clothes differed in each society, they had one thing it common--they appeared quite violent to Theroux. Pakistanis and Indians used sticks and rocks, respectively, to beat the clothes, while Burmese women used paddles. Altogether, it created an impression of "soapy violence" as the sun was rising each day in Asia.
