The Vietnamese tourism office came across as a surreal place because the government was desperately trying to promote travel in a nation most Westerners associated with an unpopular war. In addition, the cease-fire was in name only and many people had been killed since the fighting was supposed to have stopped. The tourism officials insisted people would want to enjoy Vietnam's beaches, but Theroux pointed out they would be too worried at being shot. One official insisted tourists would like the spontaneity of Vietnam and the chance for "adventure."
