Theroux stated that the Sikhs above all valued piety, ferocity, and strength (as symbolized by their common surname Singh, meaning lion). He also said they were excellent soldiers. Despite these characteristics, however, he found the Sikhs to be kind and friendly. As for religious requirements, Sikhs wore special underwear, could not cut their hair, and carried silver bangles, wooden combs, and iron daggers.
