Why is Talbot afraid to take Japanese language lessons with Aldred in the novel, The Great Fire?

Talbot is afraid to take Japanese language lessons with Aldred because he is taught and trained to fight against them and does not want to know their language. He considers them animals and does not want to speak that language. He also fears being made fun of by his peers and doesn't want to risk the ridicule.
