Most the novel’s action to take place in Alaska occurs in the Kenai Peninsula, particularly the settlement of Kaneq and the nearby town of Homer. Homer is well-developed and houses the local services, such as the police, the medical facilities, and the ferry. Kaneq is isolated, accessible only by boat or plane. Both places are eclectic and wild, and the people who live there are untamed and individualistic. By the end of the novel, they have both developed into tourist-friendly and more prosperous towns, although always focused on the idea of wilderness and freedom.
