Who is Wang from The Good Person of Szechuan and what is their importance?

Wang is a con man. He sells water on the streets, and he is the only one who cares that the gods are coming to Szechuan. Wang does his best to make sure the gods have a pleasant stay, and afterward, the gods appear to him in dreams. He speaks to the gods about Shen Teh’s goodness, and he begs them to help her.
