What are two of the main conflicts in the book?

The first conflict can be found in Ranofer's relationship with his brother (half-brother), who forces Ranofer to take part in his smuggling operations. The second conflict is internal, a conflict based on Ranofer's desire to become a great goldsmith, and his doubts that he can attain his dream.
