The theme of loss is apparent throughout Golden Fool. Everyone seems to suffer a loss of some kind and that loss defines them as an individual. For example, Tom loses Nighteyes and he mourns over his loss. Due to the wolf's death, Tom also loses a part of his emotional self. He struggles to bond with his foster son, Hap, and with his lover, Jinna. He cannot do what is emotionally right in either situation because he is wrought with loss. Thus, he loses these two relationships in the duration. Tom also loses his real identity as FitzChivalry Farseer. He struggles every day to keep up the servant identity of Tom, but in reality, he has lost a major part of himself.
