While Ophelia was pregnant with Orion, she used her dark magic to splice his genes with the DNA of a maw-mouth. This turned Orion into a half-monster who had the powers of a maw-mouth and the loyalty of a human. When he got older, Ophelia hoped that she would be able to use him as a weapon so that she could control the other enclaves by threatening to use him against them.
