While it seems like she is simply the sidekick, Hana becomes the novels last connection to the Landauers. Hana is Liesel's childhood friend and greatest admirer. From the beginning the reader can tell that Hana is full of life, excitement and adventure. She expresses her interest in men and women, although she is already married to Oskar. Hana is able to show she is a wonderful friend. When Liesel becomes deathly ill, Hana is right by her side the entire time. The reader also discovers she is loyal. When all of her husband's money is taken because he is Jewish, she sells herself to a Nazi for money and protection. While it is unclear as to what she feels for the official, it becomes clear that she wants to save herself and her husband. She will do what she must to survive.
