In Chapter 6, why did Alice no longer enjoy the weekly church dinners?

During the first months after Alice had moved to Baileyville, she had almost enjoyed the weekly church dinners. It was a relief to have another person eat with and the food was better. Lately, though, she had stopped enjoying the dinners, because everyone kept asking when she and Bennett were going to have a baby.
