How did Margery learn to read?

Margery use to go on trips with her father to sell moonshine. He was less likely to get caught if he had a little girl with him. He did not want Margery to go to school, so when he would deliver moonshine to the mine, Miss Sophia and Miss Ada had helped Margery learn to love to read.
