Alice told her father-in-law what Bennett had said about his mother and her charitable acts. She told them that if they could encourage godless families to read, they could encourage them to turn to scripture and the Bible. By telling him how good it would be for families to read the Bible and how that would have made his wife happy, she persuaded him that she might have a point about the traveling library.
