Why won't the giver escape with Jonas?

According to the text, the Giver wants to escape with Jonas but has no intention of doing so. He knows that when a Receiver of Memory of a Giver arrives at Elsewhere, the memories 'will flood back to everyone in the Community'. As not all memories are pleasant ones, and people have almost no experience in handling them, the Giver must stay and help the citizens cope with the 'new' memories.
